Genre: Chamber music

French Passion

Ravel’s fiery Tzigane and Marguerite Canal’s warm violin sonata.

Food and music are a wonderful combination. Our senses are twice as stimulated. At this soup concert, we will meet Gabriel Cornet, who is ordinarily in the second violin section of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, together with pianist Tom Grimaud. Both grew up in France and enjoy playing French music.

First up is music by Marguerite Canal, who won the prestigious Prix de Rome prize in 1920 and was the first French female conductor. The dreamy and warmly lyrical Sonata for violin and piano is one of her most played and beloved pieces.

Ravel’s fiery and passionate Tzigane is a true test, in which the violin soloist must radiate with unimaginable virtuosity in the spirit of Paganini. It is a lightning fast musical explosion with dramatic double stops, jumping bows, pizzicato and dizzyingly high harmonics. The piano part also puts the entire keyboard to use, following the violinist at an occasionally giddying tempo.
