150 years of Stenhammar – Piano Recital

Stenhammar expert Martin Sturfält and some of the most beloved piano pieces.

Wilhelm Stenhammar is without hesitation one of Sweden’s most significant composers and was one of the foremost Swedish pianists of his time. We are celebrating the 150-year anniversary of Stenhammar’s birth with a large festival. Stenhammar was born in 1871 in Stockholm. His family lived on Kammakargatan, just a few hundred metres from the location at which Konserthuset Stockholm would later be built.

Pianist Martin Sturfält regularly performs as a soloist with Swedish and international symphony orchestras; he is also one of Sweden’s leading experts in Stenhammar’s music. His recordings of both piano concertos have received international acclaim.

Here, we will hear him in a selection of Stenhammar’s solo pieces for piano: two of the five sonatas, the three exuberantly masterful and romantically passionate Fantasies, opus 11, and not least, the heartfelt, introspective, melodic, and harmonically beautiful Late Summer Nights from 1914, his most famous solo piece for piano.
