New Friday with Norrbotten Neo

Re-take New Sweden.

Norrbotten NEO is a unique ensemble with a keen sensibility for continuously exploring contemporary music and trends among Swedish composers. As one of the ensembles that commissions the most new works from Swedish composers, NEO is an important part of the development of contemporary music. This programme consists only of Swedish composers. The New Sweden concert was cancelled last season, so this is a ‘re-take’.

Jenny Hettne often works with musical subtlety and Stimme aus der Ferne was composed in close collaboration with musicians from Norrbotten NEO.

Karin Rehnqvist is one of the most recognised Swedish composers on the international scene and a professor of composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Of her new piece, she says: “Our senses are extra sensitive at night. Sound seems louder, light seems brighter. You have to be cautious. This is what my new piece Music at Night is about. The alto flute begins, the bass clarinet responds.”

Kim Hedås’ music is detailed and expressive. The world premiere of her piece Rounds was performed in 2018 at Konserthuset by Norrbotten NEO’s flute player, Sara Hammarström. Of Crystallites for Piano, Andrea Tarrodi says: “When I wrote the piece, I was thinking about falling snowflakes, which all appear to be identical upon first glance. But when you zoom in, you can see that each one has its own structure.”

To conclude, we will hear music by Madeleine Isaksson, who lives in France. Her piece Capsuled Time can be considered as music centered around timbre, in which percussion plays a prominent role, occasionally together with the piano. The title refers to composed, ‘musical time’ which encompasses different movements of time and atmospheres.”

New Friday is the subscription for anyone who is curious and interested in exploring the new music of our era. Come early, stay late – the bar will be open before and after the concert with drinks and appetizers.
