New Friday with Stockholm Chamber Brass

The world-leading brass ensemble has released a series of critically acclaimed albums and recently celebrated its 30-year anniversary. We will hear Urban Agnas and Tom Poulson, trumpets; Annamia Larsson, horn; Jonas Bylund, trombone; and Magnus Vangsnes Bjørgo, tuba.

Espiral was composed for Stockholm Chamber Brass by Cathy Milliken, who was born in Brisbane, Australia and lives in Berlin. She enjoys composing in close collaboration with musicians and is also an artistic director and oboist, and a student of none other than the celebrated oboist and composer Heinz Holliger. 

The brass quintet by Francisco Coll was also a commission for the ensemble. The Spanish composer and conductor, who lives in Lucerne, Switzerland, studied under Thomas Adès (Konserthuset’s Composer Festival 2009) and creates music with a feverish energy and occasional flamenco elements.

Slovenian Nina Senk first studied in her native country and then with teachers including Matthias Pintscher in Germany. Her Tangle for trumpet and brass quintet has a theatrical quality that seems to create scenes, with the instruments in the leading roles.

Djuro Zivkovic, who was born in Serbia but has been active in Sweden for over 20 years, composed Quintet Byzantine for Stockholm Chamber Brass. It is a piece in six movements and as the title suggests, it was inspired by Byzantine scales and an ancient form, with unison melodies that grow and become richly colourful.
