Stockholm-based Hidden Mother consists of percussionists Ulrik Nilsson and Magdalena Meitzner. Nilsson is a former member of the percussion ensemble Kroumata, while Meitzner is also active as a composer.

Hidden Mother uses uncommon instruments for a percussion ensemble, often incorporating sound objects and other props. Hidden Mother’s concerts are more like performances, where individual pieces are integrated into a choreographed whole. Inspired by mysticism, religion and psychology, a flow of sound and imagery is created.

The ensemble has been active since 2010, originally as a trio with Pontus Langendorf, and has performed at festivals including the German Ruhrtriennale and Italian Transart, as well as Swedish Kluster, Vindöga, Resonans and Sound of Stockholm. In 2019, they were the Ensemble-in-Residence for the Min Granne Tonsättaren (“My Neighbour the Composer”) concert series and performed music by Ida Lundén, Ivo Nilsson, Alexandra Nilsson, Maria Lithell Flyg and Jens Hedman.

The name Hidden Mother is in reference to the “hidden mother photography” that was common in the mid-1800s. The cameras of early photography had long exposure times, and when taking portraits of children, there was a need for the child to hold still to prevent the image from being blurry. A trick was developed in which the child’s mother (or someone else) was covered with a sheet while holding the child on her lap.
