Pianorama – Eccentrics and piano mosaic

The composers who went their own ways.

This year’s edition of Pianorama presents musical eccentrics in two programme pieces: Charles-Valentin Alkan, who is known for his hyper-virtuosic piano pieces, and Alexander Scriabin, who was Russian but spent many years in Paris. In addition, we hear music by Debussy, whose musical Impressionism was ground-breaking.

Under the Piano Mosaic heading, we hear the young pianist Pontus Carron in his own programme, where we hear music by Federico Mompou. He was born in Barcelona to a French mother and thus spent much of his life in Paris, where he studied with Gabriel Fauré. Carron also presents music by, among others, Venezuelan-French Reynaldo Hahn and Belgian-French César Franck.

In the second edition of musical eccentrics, we hear music by Alexander Scriabin, who was Russian but spent several years in Paris before moving on to Brussels. We also hear music by Charles Ives, whose music contained influences of French songs, despite his strong American foundation.
