Genre: Chamber music

Cuarteto Quiroga

Haydn in company with Spanish and Argentinian music.

Spanish Cuarteto Quiroga has become established as one of today’s most dynamic and unique string quartets. They have won international recognition from critics and audiences alike for their on-stage radiance, phenomenal playing, and ability to imbue traditional classical and new music with energy, charm and beauty. The quartet’s name is in tribute to Galician violinist Manuel Quiroga, one of the most prominent instrumentalists of Spanish music history.

The programme includes new Spanish music: Cecilia Díaz Pestano’s Los ojos del espejo (Eyes in the Mirror). The work is preceded by one of Haydn’s late string quartets – music with strong contrasts and extroverted drama. Finally, we hear twentieth-century composer Alberto Ginastera’s first string quartet. As is often the case with Ginastera, in this music we hear traces of the traditional music of his homeland, Argentina. However, it is never folkloric, but rather deeply personal, with a powerfully rhythmic drive.
