Soup Concert with violin and piano

A playful, sparkling, all-French programme.

This all-French soup concert offers tasteful music by Graciane Finzi (born 1945). Her Winternacht is inspired by Johannes Brahms’ third and final violin sonata, and to be sure, there are touchpoints in the first movement’s restless, evocative pulse. But this music is also very French, with sparkling gestures and the particular melancholy of a rainy Sunday in Paris.

For Francis Poulenc, wind instruments were often close at hand, but just like Graciane Finzi, he was impressed by Johannes Brahms’ violin sonatas. He made several attempts at composing a sonata for violin and piano, but was not satisfied until completing this one in the early 1940s. And he had every right to be satisfied, as this music contains everything from playful rhythms and lovely melodies to surprising effects.

Sofie Sunnerstam, who has been a member of the first violin section of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 2019, performs at this concert with Dutch pianist Daan Treur.
