Soup Concert with violin and piano

Polish music with Bacewicz and czech with Janácek.

French Gabriel Cornet is a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s second violin section. He appears at this concert with fellow countryman Tom Grimaud, with whom he has performed soup concerts on two previous occasions, in 2018 and 2019.

This time, the programme includes Polish and Czech music. Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz (1909–1969) was also a world-class violinist, and her oeuvre consists of no less than seven (!) virtuosic violin concertos. Sonata No. 4 for violin and piano is a powerfully expressive piece of music, with lively rhythms, playfulness and humour.

Leos Janácek’s Sonata for violin and piano was composed at the outbreak of World War I, and Janácek recalls the summer of 1914, when he began composing the piece, saying he “could almost hear the sound of steel crashing about in my worried mind.” The mature composer’s style is evident here, with a melody that occasionally resembles spoken phrases, and as with Bacewicz, the music contains imaginative rhythms.

***

Menu: Grilled bell pepper soup with smoked bell pepper oil & fried lacinato kale. The soup is served with sourdough bread, crisp bread, whipped butter and cheese, as well as a drink, coffee/tea and a small biscuit. All soups are lactose- and gluten-free.
