Music by the Schumann couple and the Mendelssohn siblings.
Saturday 16 March 2024 16.00Ends approximately 18.00
For so long, we only discussed one Schumann – Robert – and one Mendelssohn – Felix. But now the music world has finally had its ears opened to Clara Schumann, Robert’s wife, who was one of the nineteenth century’s most admired pianists and brilliant composers. Similarly, music by Felix Mendelssohn’s sister Fanny has finally been granted more space on the repertoires of many ensembles and orchestras.
At this concert, which presents the music of family members side by side, it is clear that Clara and Fanny both genuinely deserve the newfound interest in their music. Clara Schumann’s Variations on a theme by Robert Schumann presents tastes of elegance and passion. The same can be said of Robert’s String Quartet No. 2, which is otherwise dedicated to his friend Felix and was performed for Clara at her 23rd birthday.
In her String Quartet, Fanny Mendelssohn has left the small scale behind, embracing an expansive musical adventure instead. A wild hunt, unrestrained joy and lyrical melodies are reflected in Felix’s emotional and furious Capriccio.
