FeminEast Festival 2018 - Female voices from the Middle East

Unforgettable concerts that shine the spotlight on female voices from the Middle East. Unheard voices that are not permitted to make themselves heard. Voices that are fought against because they can conquer the world and disrupt its structures. FeminEast features powerful women who, through their voices and artistry, take action for their fellow human beings. This unique troupe of artists spreads vitality and power through expressions that make an impression. In December, FeminEast will offer unparalleled concerts featuring everything from classic Arabic and Persian music to on-point jazz, lively club nights and hip hop.

Ustad Farida Mahwash is “the voice of Afghanistan” and one of the most beloved singers in all of Central Asia. She conveys the rich musical heritage of her country with a clear, powerful voice, refined ornamentation and stage presence. She dazzles audiences worldwide and is also the first woman ever to be given the “Ustad” title of honour; the title had previously been reserved for men.

Farida Mahwash’s phenomenal career has lasted through two wars and the forced displacement from her home country of Afghanistan. In 1991, she and her family were granted political asylum in the US and ten years later, Mahwash was reunited with other exiled Afghan musicians and founded The Kabul Ensemble. The group has appeared on many of Europe’s most prestigious concert stages and in 2003, they released the critically acclaimed album Radio Kaboul. The rich collection of songs pays tribute to composers and musicians from the golden age of Afghan radio who have disappeared or were banished. In the same year, Mahwash also received the prestigious BBC Radio 3 World Music Award. Since then, she also released the acclaimed album Ghazals Afghans.

This concert is part of the FeminEast festival 2018 and is arranged by Riksteatern in partnership with Farhang and Konserthuset Stockholm.
