Livestream: When Did ”Swedish” Folk Music become Swedish?

An evening of delving into whether it is actually interesting to define music as national.

To address the question of when “Swedish” folk music became Swedish, the Royal Swedish Academy of Music presents an evening of delving into whether it is actually interesting to define music as national. Why do we so long to identify “our” music? Is the tradition defined by the actual songs, or by how we play them – or both? And not least of all – what does our topic of discussion sound like?

Folk musician Samantha Ohlanders and folk musician and director of the Music Archives of Småland Magnus Gustafsson meet for a conversation led by folk musician and academy member Ale Möller.

This Ringing Academy is part of the celebration of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music’s 250-year anniversary throughout the anniversary year.
