Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas
All ten of Beethoven’s violin sonatas are performed across three concerts – by Johan Dalene, James Ehnes and Janine Jansen.
In the early sonatas, the legacy of Haydn and Mozart is still evident, but in Sonatas Nos. 4 and 5 a shift occurs. Here, Beethoven breaks new ground, exploring the full expressive potential of both piano and violin. From this point on, he leads the genre into entirely new realms.
Sunday 14 February, Grünewald Hall: Johan Dalene – Sonatas Nos. 1–4, with pianist Christian Ihle Hadland.
Friday 19 February, the Main Hall: James Ehnes – Sonata No. 5 “Spring”, No. 7 and No. 10, with pianist Orion Weiss.
Saturday 27 February, the Main Hall: Janine Jansen – Sonatas Nos. 6, 8 and 9 “Kreutzer”, with pianist Denis Kozhukhin.
