Chamber Concert with the RSPO Orchestra Academy

This season's academy musicians play American, Korean and Danish music.

The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s Orchestra Academy the young musicians receive individual tuition on their instrument by tutors that are predominantly leaders and principals of the orchestra. In addition, extensive chamber music playing is a vital part of the course, as is shown by this concert.

Flannery Cunningham is an American composer who both surprises and delights in her music. In the piece We are the same as we have always been, she plays with our almost slavish love of harmony. The piece moves from an intimate, private, almost lonely world to a crowded, public one.

Missy Mazzoli is an American composer who has been widely recognized in recent years, and her music is being performed by top musicians and orchestras all over the world. Her Lies You Can Believe In, for string trio, is not about untruths; the “lie” here is a tale around an invented and embellished urban folk music, inspired eastern European folk music, punk, and electronica.

South Korean Isang Yun (1917–95) lived in dramatic conditions, he was imprisoned during the Japanese occupation, and later also by his own regime under the authoritarian rule of Park Chung-hee. He settled in Germany and was a professor of composition in Berlin. In his music, he blends Western avant-garde with Korean music. We hear his Trio for clarinet, bassoon and French horn.

Carl Nielsen's quintet Serenata in vano was reportedly written in a few days, intended for a tour that an ensemble from the opera orchestra would carry out in Denmark in 1914. ”Serenata in vano is a humorous trifle”, Nielsen wrote. The musicians try in different ways to lure the fair one out onto the balcony, but she does not appear. When they have played in vain (in vano), they shuffle off home with the little final march – which they play for their own amusement.
