Erich Wolfgang Korngold was a musical prodigy who attracted the admiration of Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss, among others, from an early age. Following his early successes as an opera composer, he moved to Hollywood, where he became one of the great pioneers of film music. His colourful and dramatic orchestral music helped shape the symphonic sound that is still associated with epic adventure films today.
In his Violin Concerto, completed in 1945, Korngold reused melodies from several of his film scores. The first movement is characterised by sweeping, passionate melodies and a rich interplay between soloist and orchestra. The slow movement is a heartfelt romance, while the finale brims with exuberant energy and dazzling violin virtuosity.
Korngold saw no contradiction between film music and concert music. In the Violin Concerto, his Central European late-Romantic heritage meets the symphonic language of film music that he himself had helped shape in Hollywood. The boundary between film music and concert music becomes almost impossible to draw.
