Elfrida Andrée composed chamber music and symphonic pieces, and was also active as an orchestra conductor. She was also the first woman in Sweden to graduate as an organist in 1860. She was later appointed the first female cathedral organist, with a position at the Gothenburg Cathedral, where she was active until her death in 1929. Laura Netzel was born in Finland but grew up in Stockholm. She studied under Widor in Paris and her romantic music earned great acclaim in nineteenth-century France. 

Both of these female composers were active in the nineteenth century and major musical pioneers. Elfrida Andrée’s primary role models were Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Schubert, but she was also influenced by her teacher Ludwig Norman.

Mikael Sjögren, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s alternate solo cellist, and the orchestra’s pianist Stefan Lindgren also perform Jakob Adolf Hägg’s classically romantic Sonata for Cello and Piano, his first mature piece, a work inspired primarily by Schumann and his teacher Gade.
