Soup concert with saxophone and cello

Philharmonic member Hanna Dahlkvist and saxophone player Johannes Thorell offer an original programme in this surprising duet format. Johann Sebastian Bach’s two-section inventions are little wonders of musical genius. He composed these simple, yet as the name indicates, creative inventions in order to teach young students.

Swedish Tebogo Monnakgotla’s opera Jean-Joseph was nominated in 2018 for the Nordic Council Music Prize. As Dagens Nyheter already concluded a few years ago, she is one of our most prominent composers. Here, we will hear her pulsating Crossing Borders. Monnakgotla is frequently inspired by poetry, something she shares with British Charlotte Bray who, in her Midnight Interludes, was inspired by 19th-century author and poet Thomas Hardy.

Edison Denisov (1929–1996) was encouraged by Shostakovich to dedicate his life to music and became one of his generation’s most prominent Russian composers. His interest in jazz compelled him to compose for saxophone and his beloved cello. Both instruments meld together in this sonata. In a tasteful conclusion to this soup concert, we will transition to Buenos Aires and Piazzolla’s immortal Libertango.
