It is no exaggeration to say that Daniil Trifonov is one of the world’s absolute foremost concert pianists. He has won several prestigious distinctions and awards in famous piano competitions such as the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, and the Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky competitions in Tel Aviv and Moscow. Piano legend Martha Argerich has said of Trifonov that “he has it all, and then some.”
He has previously guest-performed at Konserthuset Stockholm, both in a recital and with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, including at the Nobel Prize Concert in 2015 when he was the soloist in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. It is with great pleasure that we now welcome back Trifonov. This time, the programme is dedicated entirely to music by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Kunst der Fuge means essentially the art of the fugue, and it is Bach’s monumental masterpiece in the form of several fugues and canons, all based on the same theme. Bach also composed himself into this perpetually fascinating and masterful music, with the notes B, A, C, H, in German notation.
Many of history’s greatest composers and pianists have arranged Bach’s work. Here, we will get to experience the famous Chaconne for solo violin in an unusual arrangement by Johannes Brahms for left hand. With dazzling technique and intense expressiveness, Trifonov will also tackle Rachmaninoff’s version of Prelude, Gavotte and Gigue from Partita in E Major, and Liszt’s arrangement for piano of the Prelude and Fugue in G Minor for organ.
