The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and chief conductor Sakari Oramo round off the concert season with volcanic, breathtaking and alluring music by Sergei Prokofiev: the popular Piano Concerto No. 3, and a piece that has never before been performed at Konserthuset: the powerful film score for Alexander Nevsky for vocal soloist, choir and orchestra.

Prokofiev composed Alexander Nevsky for a film by Sergei Eisenstein, who was immortalized in the film world through the movie Battleship Potemkin, perhaps one of history’s most influential movies. Alexander Nevsky plays out in the thirteenth century in the Novgorod Republic, which is threatened by enemies. The hero, Alexander, gathers his troops and ventures out in defence. It is a matter of Russia’s very survival. The music is striking, charged with powerful choral parts and melodic pathos – composed before Prokofiev opposed the country’s prevailing cultural politics.

Of Prokofiev’s five piano concertos, the third is his most played and popular and since its world premiere in Chicago in 1921, with the composer himself as the soloist, it has been a modern classic. This dazzling concerto is filled with energy, elegance and melodic beauty. At this concert, Roland Pöntinen, one of Sweden’s absolute top pianists, will handle the virtuoso solo part.
