Marmen Quartet

Young quartet performing music by Haydn, Brahms, Ligeti and Salina Fisher.

The string quartet series at Konserthuset Stockholm has a youthful touch this season, featuring quartets that have garnered great attention in recent years. British Marmen Quartet formed at the Royal College of Music in London in 2013 and in 2019, they won international competitions for string quartets in Bordeaux, France, and Banff, Canada. The name comes from the quartet’s Swedish first violinist, Johannes Marmén.

The impact of Joseph Haydn on western classical music can hardly be overstated. Both Mozart and early Beethoven followed in his footsteps. Together, these three composers are referred to as the First Viennese School. Haydn experimented with form and content early on, constantly seeking new paths and developing the string quartet as an ensemble form.

He was also extremely prolific and composed fully 63 string quartets. At this concert, Marmen Quartet plays the third of the six quartets in his Opus 64. And as ever with Haydn, this music is radiant with melodic imagination, exquisite balance, and extroverted energy. A weightier sense of gravity characterises Brahms’ String Quartet No. 1 in C minor, in which his admiration for Beethoven clearly shines through. At the same time, the piece is unmistakably Brahms.

Between the great classical composers, we hear György Ligeti’s captivating Métamorphoses Nocturnes, and Heal by Salina Fisher, a young composer from New Zealand (born 1993). In her music, she gives expression to New Zealand’s rich musical traditions.
