Anton Bruckner’s voluminous and sonically magnificent symphonies never cease to amaze. The balance between the overarching musical architecture and the smaller details is always exquisitely even. The Eighth Symphony became Bruckner’s last complete symphony and is a summation of all of his compositional achievements. After completing the work on the magnificent finale, Bruckner concluded: “This is the most significant orchestral movement I have composed in my entire life.”
German conductor Christoph Eschenbach leads the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Eschenbach has been chief conductor for several of the world’s top orchestras and is now head of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.
Christoph Eschenbach has guest-performed at Konserthuset and with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra many times before, and debuted with the orchestra in 1974 – as the piano soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. He has been frequently invited in the past decade, particularly as one of the world’s leading conductors of Mahler and Bruckner’s repertoires.
