Concert in support of Ukraine

A benefit concert in support of Ukraine, in partnership with orchestra academies.

This benefit concert in support of Ukraine is yet another partnership between the orchestra academies of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.

The musicians are led by Polish conductor Vincent Kozlovsky, who, in addition to work in his home country, has also regularly worked with the philharmonic and opera in Lviv, Ukraine. We also hear Polish pianist Tymoteusz Bies, Swedish-Ukrainian pianist Natalya Pasichnyk and Polish-Ukrainian soprano Olga Pasiecznik.

The programme is crowned by a chamber version of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, which is occasionally called “sky blue” due to its light and lyrical nature. First we hear works by Swedish Andrea Tarrodi, Polish Henryk Górecki and Polish-British Andrzej Panufnik. The piece by Tarrodi is based on two folk tunes – one from Ukraine and one from Sweden.

The international RSPO Orchestra Academy is an advanced academic training for young musicians. This “orchestra academy” is linked to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and NOSPR is the equivalent of the Polish orchestra. These elite young musicians are meeting here again in their third collaboration in less than a year.

This concert is part of a European Festival: Ukrainian Spring, organised by the network European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC), in partnership with the European Commission.

This year’s theme under Sweden’s EU chairmanship is Europe’s united front in support of Ukraine. The partnership between Konserthuset Stockholm and the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice is taking place in 2023, with support from the Polish Culture Department under their Inspiring Culture initiative.
