Organ matinée with Ulf Norberg

Through Konserthuset’s popular organ matinée subscription, audiences get to hear Sweden’s leading organists play the building’s organ – one of the largest in Europe, with 6,100 pipes.

The first organ matinée of the season features Konserthuset’s house organist Ulf Norberg. He is also in charge of programming the entire subscription, and he is passionate about introducing the large organ repertoire to a broader audience. Ulf Norberg is also the organist of Hedvig Eleonora Church in Östermalm, Stockholm.

Norberg plays an arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach and a tribute to Bach by Max Reger. Duke Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar died at just 18 years old. He was a music collector and a gifted composer. Bach, the court organist of Weimar at that time, arranged some of the duke’s works for organ.

Reger is generally considered the foremost German organ composer after Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach and Reger are separated by about a century, but there is no doubt that Reger was strongly influenced by the great Baroque master. This is explicit in some of his works – for example, Fantasy and Fugue on B-A-C-H.
