Orpheus’ Treasure Trove – Passion in Naples

Pieces from a musical metropolis by Porpora, Scarlatti and more.

Since its formation in 2015, Orpheus Baroque has grown into an important part of the capital city’s music offering, serving as a meeting place for orchestra members and some of Sweden’s foremost freelance Baroque musicians. At this performance, we hear the ensemble in a format that is closer to chamber music during the vignette Orpheus Treasure Trove.

Naples has played an important role historically not only for the region’s music, but also for western music more broadly. Early on – in the sixteenth century – music conservatories run by the church were based here, and Naples was referred to as Europe’s music conservatory. The city is primarily associated with dazzling songs and opera, but here, we establish familiarity with instrumental music by leading seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Neapolitan composers.

Critically acclaimed ensemble Orpheus Baroque regularly works with prominent guests from the international Baroque music scene. Artistic director is the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic’s solo cellist, Johannes Rostamo, as well as concertmaster and Baroque violinist Elin Gabrielsson, a member, among other ensembles, of Italian Europa Galante.
