Philharmonic Vicki Powell is the viola soloist and Andrew Manze leads the orchestra.

Ralph Vaughan Williams is one of England’s best-known and most significant composers. His atmospheric music contains everything from passionate drama to explosive charges and a reflective sense of calm. Performing the solo in his Suite for Viola and Orchestra is American Vicki Powell, who has been section leader and a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 2018.  

At first we hear Ambarvalia by British twentieth-century composer Ruth Gipps. This is warm, elegant music for a small orchestra, in which we sense inspiration from her fellow countryman, Edward Elgar. The Guardian has described her music as characterful, playful and unashamedly romantic, which is evident in Cringlemire Garden. 

This all-British programme concludes with William Walton’s adventurous, beautiful and passionate second symphony.
