Soup Concert with flute, cello and piano
Philharmonic musicians play Felix Mendelssohn and Amy Beach.
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Piano Trio No. 1 is one of the great masterpieces of the genre. The four movements are like an entire universe of emotions and range from worry and sorrow to life-affirming joy and mild drama. We hear a trio with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s flute player Andreas Ahlin, and the orchestra’s pianist Stefan Lindgren, along with a guest performance by Josef Alin on cello.
The trio begins with music by Amy Beach (1867–1944), the first major successful American female composer. Essentially all of her works were printed and performed during her lifetime, and her renown reached Europe as well. Pastorale is poetic and moody, and is followed by the rush and cheeriness of Caprice.
