In the Company of Lang Lang
The charismatic pianist takes on Beethoven and more.
Without reservation, Lang Lang is one of the most charismatic and prominent concert pianists in the world today. Born in Shenyang, in China’s northeastern Liaoning province, he began playing the piano at the age of two – inspired, he says, by an episode of the cartoon Tom and Jerry in which Tom plays Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.
Lang Lang has truly taken the classical music world by storm. Following his soloist debut at the renowned BBC Proms in London, one critic declared the event “historic.” Since then, he has become a classical superstar, performing at high-profile events such as the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony for Barack Obama in Oslo and the 2008 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in Beijing.
He has visited Konserthuset Stockholm on several occasions, both in solo recitals and with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra – including the 2007 Nobel Prize Concert, where he performed Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. His most recent visit was in 2016, when he gave a recital featuring music by Tchaikovsky, Bach and Chopin.
A planned concert in 2021 was cancelled due to the pandemic, but now we can finally look forward to seeing and hearing Lang Lang at Konserthuset once again. The programme includes music by Mozart, Albéniz and Beethoven.
