FeminEast Festival 2018 - Female voices from the Middle East

Unforgettable concerts that shine the spotlight on female voices from the Middle East. Unheard voices that are not permitted to make themselves heard. Voices that are fought against because they can conquer the world and disrupt its structures. FeminEast features powerful women who, through their voices and artistry, take action for their fellow human beings. This unique troupe of artists spreads vitality and power through expressions that make an impression. In December, FeminEast will offer unparalleled concerts featuring everything from classic Arabic and Persian music to on-point jazz, lively club nights and hip hop.

Lena Chamamyan’s voice and music have moved audiences in both the East and West. She has been called one of the leading singers of her generation. Hints of Oriental jazz permeate her music – a blend of classic Arabic music, Armenian songs and western music. She was born in 1980 in Damascus and has Armenian roots. At just five years old, she performed her first concert. Her first major concert was in Aleppo in 2002.

Lena Chamamyan is one of few Middle Eastern women to both compose music, and to produce and sing. She released her first album in 2006, on which she blends elements of Oriental music and jazz. That same year, she won the Radio Monte Carlo Moyen-Orient Music Award for best world music. In 2011, Arabian Business Magazine included her on a list of the 500 most influential people of the Arab world.

Over the years, Lena Chamamyan has participated in many prestigious Arabic and international music festivals, and her voice can be heard on several TV shows and dramatic works in Syria as well as other countries. The songs on her latest album, Ghazl El Banat, have a strong focus on peace and the protection of women and children.

This concert is part of the FeminEast festival 2018 and is arranged by Riksteatern in partnership with Farhang and Konserthuset Stockholm.
