Curious Classics – Trio Joubran

The classical oud tradition with a new twist.

Trio Joubran has millions of views on YouTube. With their meditative, evocative and captivating music, the ensemble comprising the three brothers Samir, Wissam and Adnan Joubran has enjoyed great successes with albums and concerts worldwide. They have performed at major opera houses and on stages like Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, Olympia and Palais de Chaillot in Paris and Barbican Centre and Cadogan Hall in London.

On their sixth record, The Long March, which was released in 2018, the trio collaborated with greats like Pink Floyd singer Roger Waters and Brian Eno, who said after recording in the studio, “Trio Joubran’s talent is strengthened by their humility as people. Their lasting and determined dedication has made them a symbol of Palestinian identity and resistance. With their dazzling music, Trio Joubran sends a message: Palestine lives.”

The group often says the trio actually consists of six brothers: the three musicians and the three instruments which were all handmade by Wissam Joubran, a violin and oud-maker trained at the Antonio Stradivari conservatory in Cremona, Italy.

The Joubran brothers spend much of their time in Paris, but recording and performing concerts in Palestinian territories is crucial to them. “When our new songs work there, we know they are ready for the rest of the world. Then I get the feeling that we can take an album on tour,” says Samir Joubran, who considers himself and the trio as ambassadors of Palestinian culture in the west.
