Inti Illimani Histórico

A long-awaited concert from one of Chile’s best known folk groups.

Inti-Illimani was formed in 1967 by engineering students at the Santiago University of Technology. They shared a deep interest in the roots of Latin American folk music and an ability to blend folk with popular music. By incorporating social aspects into their lyrics, they soon became leading representatives of the Nueva Canción music movement.

Following the 1973 Chilean coup d’état, Inti-Illimani were banned by the military junta and lived in exile in Italy. After 15 years, in 1988 the group returned to Chile and became an important part of the democratisation movement, a commitment to which they have remained faithful.

The group ultimately split into two: Inti-illimani Histórico and Nuevos Inti-illimani. We have invited Inti-Illimani Histórico to Stockholm, 50 years after the military coup in Chile that was the start of a brutal 17-year military dictatorship involving the persecution of millions of Chilean families. With the unifying force of their music, which has united and inspired not only the people of Chile, but people from all over the world, we can look forward to an incredible concert.
