Rising Stars 2024
Don’t miss the opportunity to hear tomorrow’s classical music stars today at this year’s Rising Stars festival.
Rising Stars is a unique and forward-looking collaboration between 22 of Europe’s leading concert halls, all members of the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO). Young musicians and ensembles from various countries are selected each year and given the opportunity to tour the concert halls and perform before international audiences.
Konserthuset Stockholm annually welcomes these ECHO Rising Stars at its own chamber music festival of the highest calibre, with the short and sweet title of Rising Stars. Experience shows that those who are selected as Rising Stars also have internationally successful careers.

Through Konserthuset’s popular organ matinée subscription, audiences get to hear prominent organists play the building’s organ – one of the largest in Europe, with 6,100 pipes. German organist Sebastian Heindl studied at the renowned conservatory in Leipzig and has enjoyed numerous successes in recent years. Through social media activity on YouTube, Heindl has generated interest in organ music among a large and young audience. He was nominated for Rising Stars by Konzerthaus Dortmund and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.
Sebastian Heindl also creates his own transcriptions and we hear his organ version of the Liszt/Horowitz arrangement of Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre, and music from Pièces caractéristiques by Clara Schumann. We also hear his Rock-Toccata and Blues-Fugue, as well as a new composition by fellow countryman Moritz Eggert, commissioned by the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO).

One of this year’s young stars is Scottish guitarist Sean Shibe, who was nominated to Rising Stars by Barbican in London. At his visit to Konserthuset, he performs music by British-American Freya Waley-Cohen and a new piece by British composer Thomas Adès, who was featured at Konserthuset’s international Composer Festival in 2009.
We also hear music by Francis Poulenc and Federic Mompou. Mompou was born in Barcelona but studied at the conservatory in Paris, and was influenced by Erik Satie and French Impressionism.

French Axelle Fanyo began her musical career as a violinist, and then switched to singing and earned her degree at the conservatory in Paris. She has studied with greats such as Waltraud Meier and Felicity Lott, and has taken masterclasses with Renée Fleming. She is a dedicated lied singer and also has a vast opera repertoire. Axelle Fanyo has worked with Esa-Pekka Salonen and pianist Julius Drake. She was nominated to Rising Stars by Paris Philharmonie, Auditorium de Lyon and the Gulbenkian Foundation.
Axelle Fanyo presents a highly personal programme of music from the twentieth century and new music, including by cabaret master Kurt Weill, rarely heard songs by Arnold Schoenberg and Pulitzer-award-winning American composer William Bolcom (born 1938). We also hear a new composition by the exciting Greek composer Sofia Avramidou (born 1988).

During the 2023/24 season, the quartet is part of Rising Stars, nominated by Bozar in Brussels.
Their repertoire is broad, with classical masterpieces as well as new compositions, and this is reflected in the programme: two key pieces from the repertoire – the quartets by Beethoven and Bartók are milestones in the art of quartet – intermingle with two new compositions.
Belgian composer Annelies van Parys’ oeuvre includes orchestral and chamber music, but above all: vocal works and music for theatre. British-Sri Lankan Vinthya Perinpanathan is trained in Western music, but has started to explore her South Asian heritage in music that crosses genres. She is a composer, violinist and DJ.

Since 2016, award-winning and acclaimed German bassoonist Mathis Stier has been the solo bassoonist with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne. He has performed as a soloist with numerous German orchestras, is a dedicated chamber musician and has worked with the Goldmund Quartet, among others. He was nominated to Rising Stars by Cologne Philharmonie, Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle Hamburg.
Mathis Stier and German accordion player Julius Schepansky, who is also one of the leading players of his instrument among the younger generation, form an unusual and fascinating duo. It goes without saying that many works in the programme were originally composed for a more common duo composition, but arranged for bassoon and accordion – often by Mathis Stier himself. In addition to works by Penderecki and Johann Sebastian Bach, several less well-known composers are presented, including new compositions by Icelandic María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir (born 1980).

Hungarian-born violinist Júlia Pusker studied at the Liszt Academy in Budapest and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She achieved a high placement at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2019. As a soloist, she has performed with the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer, and as a chamber musician, she has worked with cellist Gautier Capuçon and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, among others. She performs here with Ukrainian pianist Christia Hudziy.
Júlia Pusker begins in French style, with music by prodigy Lili Boulanger and Debussy. We hear elements of her homeland, Hungary, such as music by Jenö Hubay, a violin student of legendary Joseph Joachim, who was a close confidant of Brahms. By Brahms, we hear a selection of the Hungarian Dances in a version for violin and piano. Of course, a main number is Eugène Ysaÿe’s sensual and dark Poème élégiaque, a milestone in the violin repertoire.
