Here, they take on Saarikoski Songs by fellow countryman Kaija Saariaho, a piece that was commissioned by Komsi. Saariaho’s expressive, painterly music is infused with a rare beauty that made her unique in the world of modern classical music. She passed away in June earlier this year, at 70 years of age.
A female pioneer preceding Saariaho was Grace Williams. She studied under Vaughan Williams and became established by the mid-twentieth century, and was also Wales’ first symphonist. Her Fairest of Stars for soprano and orchestra is a shimmering, beautiful piece with text from John Milton’s Paradise Lost.
Sinfonia da Requiem from 1940 was a Japanese commission for a piece of music in celebration of the 2600-year anniversary of the founding of the Japanese Empire. Pacifist Benjamin Britten provided an incredibly powerful, yet deeply fateful work that surprised everyone.
The concert begins with music by American Andrew Norman (born 1979), which the Los Angeles Times described as “the leading American composer of his generation.” We hear his imaginative, vivid, and – as the title suggests – loose-lipped Unstuck.

Korngold was threatened by the politically intensifying climate of Europe and emigrated to the US in 1938. There, he quickly became one of Hollywood’s most in-demand film score composers. The violin concerto is built on a theme from some of his movies and was a huge success immediately.
While visiting Italy with his family, Sibelius worked out several ideas for Symphony No. 2. After its world premiere in 1902, it became a symbol of Finnish liberation from Russian control, and upon hearing this sincere, singing and ultimately triumphant music, it is not difficult to understand why.
The orchestra is led by German Anja Bihlmaier, principal conductor of Residentie Orkest The Hague since 2021. She has worked with a number of prominent orchestras around the world. Her repertoire is vast and she also works as an opera conductor. Bihlmaier has conducted the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra twice before, in 2017 and 2019. (In this concert, Bihlmaier replaces the previously announced conductor Dalia Stasevska.)
The concert opens with music by Andrea Tarrodi, one of Sweden’s most buzzed-about young composers, praised for her personal and vibrant music. Her piece Liguria was inspired by the idyllic little fishing villages on the Ligurian Sea on the northwest coast of Italy.

His shifting, richly varied and imaginative music is often associated with familiar classical and romantic composers, such as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms, but it is simultaneously unmistakably rooted in our era. His unique blend of tradition and innovation has made him one of the world’s most frequently performed contemporary composers.
This concert kicks off powerfully – Fanfare for 10 wind-players and percussion. In the following orchestral piece, Lied, Widmann ties musical threads back to Franz Schubert, whom he describes as a “musical genius”.
Ad absurdum nearly approaches the absurdist limit of a virtuosic solo piece for trumpet, with a tempo so high from the beginning that it simply could not go any higher.
Freie Stücke (Free Pieces) consists of ten cohesive parts, each one focused on a special sound phenomenon: pulse, noise, unanimity, overtones, and more. It is a fascinating review of music’s components and sonic possibilities.
Zeitensprünge – Leaps in Time – is a study of various musical expressions, but of a completely different variety. It was composed for the 450-year anniversary of Staatskapelle Berlin in 2020 and consists of a musical journey through time and the orchestra’s history. The piece has 450 beats, each of which represents a year.

Now she returns as soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20, one of his most beloved piano concertos.
We also hear music by the unbelievably talented Franz Schmidt. He studied with Bruckner, and was cellist with the Vienna Philharmonic for 15 years. The orchestra’s conductor Gustav Mahler always wanted Schmidt to take the solo parts. His emotional late-romantic music is played far too seldom, but now we have the chance to hear the second symphony.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by Australian Simone Young, a leading interpreter of the German and Austrian repertoires. She was the first woman to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic and she spent many years as artistic director of the Hamburg State Opera and chief music director of the Hamburg Philharmonic. Simone Young has previously conducted the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in works including Franz Schmidt’s Symphony No 4.

His atmospheric music contains everything from passionate drama to explosive charges and a reflective sense of calm. Performing the solo in his Concerto for Viola and Orchestra is American Vicki Powell, who has been section leader and a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 2018.
At first we hear Ambarvalia by British twentieth-century composer Ruth Gipps. This is warm, elegant music for a small orchestra, in which we sense inspiration from her fellow countryman, Edward Elgar. The Guardian has described her music as characterful, playful and unashamedly romantic, which is evident in Cringlemire Garden.
This all-British programme concludes with William Walton’s adventurous, beautiful and passionate second symphony.

Dalene and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra recently released an album of Sibelius’ and Nielsen’s violin concertos. He was then named Young Artist of the Year by the leading magazine Gramophone, and the cd was also awarded a Swedish Grammy.
At this concert, we hear him in Nielsen’s Violin Concerto, a dazzling, virtuosic masterpiece! It is highly evident that Nielsen was a violinist in this temperamental concerto, in which he truly takes advantage of the incredible power and expressive possibilities of the violin.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by Sakari Oramo, who was the orchestra’s chief conductor and artistic director from 2008–21. His final concert as chief conductor was an in-depth journey through the musical landscape of Jean Sibelius. At this concert, we have yet another opportunity to hear Sakari Oramo interpret Sibelius’ Symphony No. 7. Dense and intensely colourful music in a single movement. In Sibelius’ own words, this symphony is full of gusto and vivacity.

He debuted with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra at a summer concert in 2022 and was promptly invited to return.
Debussy’s sensual depiction of the awakening of a faun is inscribed for eternity in music history. This music is inspired by a poem by Mallarmé, and a similarly mystical, dreamy mood unfurls in Henri Dutilleux’ masterful Cello Concerto from 1970, inspired by a poem by Baudelaire. The title refers to a distant, lost world: Tout un monde lointain. Multi-award winning French cellist Victor Julien-Laferrière debuts with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
Swedish Valborg Aulin (1860−1928) studied in Paris, and in four movements – or scenes – depicts atmospheres and events in the French capital. Tableaux Parisiens was her sole orchestral work, but it was never performed in her lifetime.
Bolero is Ravel’s best-known work; it was originally music for ballet but is more often performed as a concert piece. Bolero is a Spanish dance in triple metre. The music consists of a recurring melody and has the same rhythm throughout – but what incredible orchestration, and what a structure! Bolero was an immediate success – much to the composer’s surprise.

At this concert, he performs Saint-Saëns’ colourful Piano Concerto No. 5. Saint-Saëns himself remarked that this piece is reminiscent of a voyage on the sea. The concerto was composed in Luxor and because of those influences, it is often referred to as The Egyptian.
We also hear Rachmaninoff’s very last work: Symphonic Dances, in which he dreams of the Russia of his childhood. In addition, we hear American Pulitzer Prize-winner Caroline Shaw’s dreamy and imaginative Entr’acte – music inspired by a string quartet by Joseph Haydn. Caroline Shaw describes how some music can transport the listener to another world, like the minuets of Haydn’s op. 77, “in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolour transition,” she says.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by award-winning American conductor Ryan Bancroft, who is chief conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra as of this season.
