Sleep and dreams are at the heart of REMS, Jacob Mühlrad’s first major orchestral work, composed in 2020 on a commission from The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. An important point of departure is the Jewish belief that during sleep, the soul separates from the body to recover spiritually, while the body recovers physically.
The music begins on the threshold between wakefulness and sleep. The sounds of breathing in and out can be heard in the orchestra, and parts of the work were inspired by Mühlrad’s own dreams. In one passage, a sound develops into a chord that then seems to melt and slowly subside.
REMS is a tapestry of sound in which different layers emerge and disappear. Fragments of Jewish liturgical music mingle with traces of lullabies and nocturnal music from other cultures – in music that moves between the physical and the dreamlike.
