About the concert

Ryan Bancroft conducts an evocative musical gem, and Seong-Jin Cho is the soloist in Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Second Piano Concerto.

The South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho won the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2015. Since then, he has become one of the most sought-after and admired soloists on the world’s major concert stages. He now returns to Konserthuset in Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s romantically effervescent Second Piano Concerto, together with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft.

We also experience shimmering orchestral splendour in Alexander Zemlinsky’s The Mermaid, a symphonic fantasy inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. With its glowing intensity, it is one of the most evocative orchestral works of the late Romantic period.

The concert opens with British-Canadian composer Cassandra Miller’s La Donna – captivating and beautiful orchestral music inspired by historical singing traditions from Genoa. The Observer has described her music as “generous, engaging and unlike any other”, while The Guardian has called one of her works “among the best classical pieces of the 21st century”.
