Philharmonic Day – Vermilion and New Technologies

The concert opens with an improvisation in which Robert Ek’s clarinet and Stefan Östersjö’s guitar encounter a third performer: interactive AI. This is followed by Beads, composed by Robert Ek and Kim Hedås as part of a collaboration rooted in Ek’s doctoral project Music in Motion. The piece features a specially designed clarinet bell that uses motion to control modular synthesisers.

The programme concludes with a trio by the Berlin-based British composer Rebecca Saunders. Vermilion is a work for clarinet, electric guitar and cello. The title refers to a vivid, glowing red pigment. The music is performed by Robert Ek, Stefan Östersjö, and Mario Morueta Delclós, a Catalan cellist and one of this year’s participants in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s Orchestra Academy.
