STHLM Blue Tide – Speak All Voices
About the concert
På svenskaSwedish sound artist Ellen Arkbro in collaboration with the world’s only tuba trio dedicated to microtonality.
In STHLM Blue Tide, we welcome what defies fixed categories – music and musicians that do not lend themselves easily to classification. Swedish artist Ellen Arkbro is a boundary-crossing sound artist, composer and musician, now based in Berlin. Her works have been performed around the world, including at the Barbican in London, GRM in Paris and the Kölner Philharmonie.
In recent years, Ellen Arkbro has collaborated with Microtub, who appear here – the only tuba trio dedicated to microtonality. The ensemble consists of the British musician Robin Hayward (microtonal F tuba) and the Norwegians Peder Simonsen and Martin Taxt (both on microtonal C tubas). The trio primarily performs its own compositions but also regularly collaborates with composers – including Arkbro.
Ellen Arkbro works with precisely tuned harmony, just intonation and meantone temperament. This is a central aspect of her music, as she explores how tones actually sound together, often in very slow processes where subtle differences in tuning become audible. One of her key reference points is the American composer La Monte Young, and, as in his work, Arkbro’s music is built on carefully balanced frequency relationships.
Ellen Arkbro has often composed for the organ and performed as an organist, and in January 2027 she will appear in Konserthuset’s new Organ Evenings.
