About the concert
På svenskaThe Norwegian-French ensemble Dans les arbres explores the blind spots of their instruments.
In STHLM Blue Tide, we welcome what defies fixed categories – music and musicians that do not lend themselves easily to classification. Among them is the Norwegian-French quartet Dans les arbres, a collective in which improvisation and attentive interplay lie at the core.
Clarinetist Xavier Charles, a central figure on the European improvisation scene, explores the full range of his instrument – from breath sounds and whispers to pure, clear tones. Norwegian guitarist Ivar Grydeland uses the pedal steel guitar’s ability to glide between pitches and unfold long, flowing melodic lines, while pianist and composer Christian Wallumrød works with restrained figures and isolated tones. Percussionist Ingar Zach contributes a finely nuanced playing style, where friction, bowing and subtle gestures take on great significance.
Together, they develop the music through small but perceptible shifts. The result may be dense and concentrated, or sparse and reflective – always shaped by a deep, attentive listening between the musicians.
