The Home Guard Band – 500 Years of Music

Sweden’s tradition of military music has a long and rich history stretching back to the 16th century. Over the centuries, it has played an important role within the Swedish Armed Forces and in the celebrations, ceremonies and traditions of Swedish society. Music has accompanied the development of Sweden’s armed forces, from signalling and music in the field to today’s concerts, military parades and state ceremonial duties.

At this anniversary concert, the Stockholm Home Guard Band celebrates this 500-year heritage with a programme reflecting the breadth and evolution of military music through the centuries. The audience will encounter music with strong ties to the Swedish military tradition, as well as compositions showcasing the expressive range and possibilities of the modern wind orchestra.

Special attention will be paid to Sverker Hållander and his great importance to the Stockholm Home Guard Band. Hållander was a conductor, composer and trombonist, but above all the band’s director of music for more than two decades, from 1979 to 2002. His work has left a lasting mark on the band as it is today and forms an important part of its history. The anniversary concert highlights both his musical legacy and his many years of work with the ensemble.

In the magnificent surroundings of Grünewald Hall, five centuries of Swedish military music are celebrated – a living cultural heritage that continues to evolve and be passed on to new generations.
