Five Thursdays at 12.15
The 45-minute mini lunchtime concerts, featuring Sweden’s leading organists, are performed on Konserthuset’s massive organ – an orchestra in and of itself with 6,100 pipes. Johann Sebastian Bach and Max Reger – but the organ matinées always include surprises. Bohemian Rhapsody? Maybe a blues fugue?

The first organ matinée of the season features Konserthuset’s house organist Ulf Norberg. He is also in charge of programming the entire subscription, and he is passionate about introducing the large organ repertoire to a broader audience. Ulf Norberg is also the organist of Hedvig Eleonora Church in Östermalm, Stockholm.
Norberg plays an arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach and a tribute to Bach by Max Reger. Duke Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar died at just 18 years old. He was a music collector and a gifted composer. Bach, the court organist of Weimar at that time, arranged some of the duke’s works for organ.
Reger is generally considered the foremost German organ composer after Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach and Reger are separated by about a century, but there is no doubt that Reger was strongly influenced by the great Baroque master. This is explicit in some of his works – for example, Fantasy and Fugue on B-A-C-H.

For 30 years, Ann-Kristin Färnström has been organist of Skön parish in Medelpad, where she has done fantastic work for classical music and the music scene. She studied organ and improvisation at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm with professors Torvald Torén and Anders Bondeman.
We hear music by Bach, the French Romantic organist Alexandre Guilmant and French Jeanne Demessieux – but also a few surprising pieces. How about an arrangement of rock band Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody? Or Irish Enya’s emotional, global hit Athair Ar Neamh – which was played at the wedding of Prince Carl Philip and Sofia Hellqvist?

Rising Stars is a unique and forward-looking collaboration between 24 of Europe’s leading concert halls, all members of the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO). A handful of young musicians and ensembles from various countries are selected each year and given the opportunity to tour the concert halls and perform before international audiences. Experience shows that those who are selected as Rising Stars also have internationally successful careers.
Through Konserthuset’s popular organ matinée subscription, audiences get to hear prominent organists play the building’s organ – one of the largest in Europe, with 6,100 pipes. German organist Sebastian Heindl studied at the renowned conservatory in Leipzig and has enjoyed numerous successes in recent years. Through social media activity on YouTube, Heindl has generated interest in organ music among a large and young audience. He was nominated for Rising Stars by Konzerthaus Dortmund and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.
Sebastian Heindl also creates his own transcriptions and we hear his organ version of the Liszt/Horowitz arrangement of Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre, and music from Pièces caractéristiques by Clara Schumann. We also hear his Rock-Toccata and Blues-Fugue, as well as a new composition by fellow countryman Moritz Eggert, commissioned by the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO).

Stefan Therstam has been the organist at Engelbrekt Church in Stockholm since 1999. He is also an award-winning improvisor and professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he teaches liturgical organ playing and improvisation.
In Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s (1877–1933) Passacaglia and Fugue on BACH, at this organ matinée he demonstrates the incredible power of the mighty organ at Konserthuset. We also get a taste of Stefan Therstam’s unparalleled ability to improvise on a given theme.

Russian-born Mila Thoors studied piano, chamber music and accompaniment at the conservatory in Rostov. Her studies continued in Sweden at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, followed by the master’s programme for organ at the Piteå School of Music. Mila Thoors has been the organist at Kloster Church in Eskilstuna since 2018. She is also active as a conductor.
The programme features several less well-known names in addition to greats like Johann Sebastian Bach and Sofia Gubaidulina. Gueorgui Mouchel was a twentieth-century Russian composer who became an important name in music in Uzbekistan. His oeuvre is dominated by orchestral works, but also includes a handful of pieces for organ. Ukrainian-born Youri Boutsko was a professor at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory until his death in 2015. He wrote 13 symphonies and four operas, among other works.
Finally, we hear music by Canadian Rachel Laurin (born 1961), a composer and a prominent organist – leading to an award for her essential contributions to the organ repertoire.
