Anders Hillborg often chooses titles that have a connection to the music while leaving room for the listener’s own associations. Through Lost Landscapes suggests something that has disappeared or been left behind, without defining what those landscapes might actually be.
Hillborg is an orchestral composer through and through, with a virtuosic feel for instrumental colour and for the ways in which sonorities can emerge, transform and dissolve. In Through Lost Landscapes, sweeping fields of sound meet more restless and playful elements. The music constantly shifts perspective, with that blend of immediate sensuality and sophisticated orchestral craftsmanship so characteristic of Hillborg.
Through Lost Landscapes was composed in 2019 and was co-commissioned by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. This performance at Konserthuset Stockholm was the work’s Swedish premiere.
