Love is a recurring theme in Richard Strauss’s songs. In Ich trage meine Minne (I Carry My Love), to a poem by Karl Friedrich Henckell, it is not associated with longing or unrequited love. Instead, the song expresses the joy of having found one’s beloved, and a love so strong that it shines even when “the sky is grey and the night pitch-black”.
Strauss allows the poem’s intimate tone to blossom into long, lyrical melodies and a richly harmonised piano part. The song moves from the quiet declaration of its opening towards an increasingly warm and passionate expression, before the opening words return: “I carry my love, speechless with bliss”.
Ich trage meine Minne is the first of the songs in Strauss’s Opus 32 and was composed in 1896.
