Fairplay – Lunchtime Concert
About the concert
På svenskaA musical journey through unique sound worlds, with folk and esoteric influences. Part of the tenth anniversary of the festival Fairplay Chamber Music.
Experience how the innermost spaces of music open up, from Nadia Boulanger’s lyrical pieces for cello via Gareth Lubbe’s evocative overtone explorations to the warmth of Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Quartet. An outstanding ensemble of musicians takes part: the cellist Jakob Koranyi and pianist Peter Friis Johansson – both artistic directors of Fairplay Chamber Music – alongside the violist and overtone singer Gareth Lubbe, the Spanish violinist Pablo Hernán Benedí and the English cellist Vashti Hunter.
Nadia Boulanger’s Trois Pièces for cello and piano are short, charming works from the early twentieth century. The music reveals a young composer in full creative bloom, later renowned above all as a teacher.
In his twelve brief miniatures, Gareth Lubbe showcases not only his skills as a violist and overtone singer, but also as a composer. The viola’s dark timbre meets the magical polyphony of overtone singing. It is unlike anything else.
Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Quartet in E flat major was written in the summer of 1889. It is his second and final piano quartet, rich in folk-like melodies, warm harmonies and a clear dramatic arc. The work encompasses both lyrical slow movements and a sparkling finale – a perfect conclusion in which the chamber music expands to almost symphonic dimensions.
