FairPlay – On Time and Water
About the concert
På svenskaActor Björn Kjellman’s reading from Andri Snær Magnason’s book On Time and Water is interwoven with Tchaikovsky’s emotionally charged music. Part of the tenth anniversary of the festival Fairplay Chamber Music.
The Icelandic author Andri Snær Magnason rose to international prominence overnight with his text Letter to the Future. In his book On Time and Water (2019), Magnason transforms large, abstract theories about the climate crisis into a more personal and emotionally resonant language. Melting glaciers, ocean acidification and the relative nature of time are explored through scientific facts, mythological imagery and personal narratives in one of the most significant books of our time.
Tchaikovsky’s emotionally charged Piano Trio in A minor is one of the most substantial works in the chamber music repertoire, both in length and scope. The 45-minute piece was written in memory of his close friend and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein. The music moves, almost miraculously, from the deepest despair and longing to festive dances and dazzling brilliance.
In this performance, readings of selected passages from Magnason’s philosophical and often poetic work are interwoven with Tchaikovsky’s intensely emotional music, bringing to life the solutions we so urgently need. This acclaimed production premiered at Fairplay Chamber Music in 2022 and has since been performed in several countries as well as on numerous stages across Sweden.
