Kind of Jazz – Duke, Strayhorn & Monk
About the concert
På svenskaClassics with Jan Lundgren and saxophonist Nicole Johänntgen, joined by Dorota Piotrowska on drums, Lisa Wulff on bass and Izabella Effenberg on vibraphone.
Kind of Jazz, led by pianist Jan Lundgren, has become something of an institution in Stockholm’s jazz scene. This spring tradition now enters its eighth season, presenting three new concerts in the Grünewald Hall – three distinct encounters in which Lundgren brings together musicians from various backgrounds and generations.
For this year’s second Kind of Jazz concert, Jan Lundgren is joined by German-Swiss saxophonist Nicole Johänntgen. The programme centres around three giants of jazz: Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn and Thelonious Monk. Nicole Johänntgen has previously performed with Jan Lundgren, including at the Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival.
“She has performed there several times, and has been a great success, so I thought it would be wonderful to invite her to Stockholm and Konserthuset.” Here they appear alongside Polish drummer Dorota Piotrowska, Swedish bassist Lisa Wulff and Polish vibraphonist Izabella Effenberg.
“Nicole has a project called SOFIA, where she highlights outstanding female jazz musicians,” says Jan Lundgren. SOFIA stands for Support Of Female Improvising Artists – an international programme that supports female jazz artists. “I’ve jammed with everyone in this line-up, but we haven’t done a proper concert together before – except for Lisa, whom I’ve toured with in Germany.”
Jan Lundgren is one of the most respected jazz pianists in the Nordic region. With over 50 albums to his name and an international career marked by stylistic versatility, he combines tradition and innovation with natural elegance.
