About the concert
På svenskaJohann Sebastian Bach’s masterpiece in a version for string trio.
Three Philharmonic musicians take on the Goldberg Variations in a version for lower strings: viola, cello and double bass. Forget the light touch of a harpsichord – or even a piano – here we hear Bach’s Goldberg Variations in a more grounded, almost physical form.
This compelling arrangement transforms the masterpiece into a gently dark-hued dialogue between three instruments. The double bass anchors the music, while the viola and cello weave the lines together with warmth. We hear selections from the great work in a tribute that is both reverent and bold – and one that shows that true genius can bear new attire.
Vicki Powell is principal viola of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Josep Canstanyer Alonso is a member of the cello section, and Valur Pálsson is principal double bass.
