The twentieth-century Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz was a violinist and a pianist, and composed vast quantities of compelling music – including seven string quartets. Together, they reflect the various phases of her artistic development, where String Quartet No. 1 is an elegant example of neo-classical music.
Beethoven’s quartet in F-minor, which is often called “Serioso,” is the shortest of his sixteen quartets – but it is also rich with substance. The four movements are permeated with a concentrated, serious atmosphere, so the celebratory conclusion emerges as an ironic paradox that only reinforces the dark mood of the quartet.
Patrik Swedrup is principal concertmaster; Johannes Lörstad is section leader of the second violins; Grop Mikael Sjögren is alternate section leader of the viola section; and Mikael Sjögren is alternate solo cellist.

Her Winternacht is inspired by Johannes Brahms’ third and final violin sonata, and to be sure, there are touchpoints in the first movement’s restless, evocative pulse. But this music is also very French, with sparkling gestures and the particular melancholy of a rainy Sunday in Paris.
For Francis Poulenc, wind instruments were often close at hand, but just like Graciane Finzi, he was impressed by Johannes Brahms’ violin sonatas. He made several attempts at composing a sonata for violin and piano, but was not satisfied until completing this one in the early 1940s. And he had every right to be satisfied, as this music contains everything from playful rhythms and lovely melodies to surprising effects.
Sofie Sunnerstam, who has been a member of the first violin section of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 2019, performs at this concert with Dutch pianist Daan Treur.

Andrea Tarrodi’s colourful first string quartet – Miroirs – was inspired by one of Isaac Grünewald’s murals in the auditorium. It depicts two people facing one another, and in the music, the instruments reflect and respond to one another in something of a conversation.
Oboe quintets are rare, but this one by British Arnold Bax (1883–1953) has reached a wider audience. His finely chiselled music contains a light-hearted sensibility with curious exploration and a touch of melancholy. Jesper Harryson is solo oboist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and performs here with a string quartet comprising philharmonic musicians Daniela Bonfiglioli, Emma Agnas de Frumerie, Catarina Skoog Aquilonius and Hanna Dahlkvist.
American composer Amy Beach (1867–1944) was celebrated in her lifetime, but like many other female composers, she was not granted the same spotlight as her male colleagues. Fortunately, in recent years her music has been performed with more frequency, including this wonderfully evocative string quartet.

At Konserthuset, we have previously heard her stirring Carrot Revolution for string quartet. This is yet another string quartet: Porcupine Wash, in reference to the location in the desert, east and inland from Los Angeles.
From the American west coast to the east coast. Caroline Shaw was born in North Carolina, and her work depicts the museum and research centre Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. The title Plan & Elevation is in reference to an architect’s portrayal of a building and its surroundings, and Shaw’s music is a personal stroll through the property’s garden.
Both American works are performed by a string quartet from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Johannes Lörstad is section leader of the second violins, of which Won-Hee Lee is also a member; Vicki Powell is section leader of the viola section; and Josep Castanyer Alonso is a member of the cello section.

Rising Stars is a unique and forward-looking collaboration between 24 of Europe’s leading concert halls, all members of the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO). A handful of young musicians and ensembles from various countries are selected each year and given the opportunity to tour the concert halls and perform before international audiences. Experience shows that those who are selected as Rising Stars also have internationally successful careers.
One of this year’s young stars is Scottish guitarist Sean Shibe, who was nominated to Rising Stars by Barbican in London. At his visit to Konserthuset, he performs music by British-American Freya Waley-Cohen and a new piece by British composer Thomas Adès, who was featured at Konserthuset’s international Composer Festival in 2009.
We also hear music by Francis Poulenc and Federic Mompou. Mompou was born in Barcelona but studied at the conservatory in Paris, and was influenced by Erik Satie and French Impressionism.

They were originally composed for violin and piano and are dedicated to legendary violinist Joseph Joachim, whom Clara regularly accompanied. César Franck’s Sonata was also originally composed for violin and piano. It quickly gained popularity and was arranged for several different instruments, but the only version approved by Franck was the arrangement for cello and piano.
Josep Castanyer Alonso has been a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s cello section since 2019. He often participates in different chamber music ensembles in both Sweden and internationally. Josep was the first student from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s Orchestra Academy to also take a seat in the orchestra.
He performs together with Magnus Svensson, artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied Evenings. He gives concerts in the Nordic region and elsewhere in Europe, and has also performed in Russia and the US. Since 2012, he has also worked at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music with re-publishing older Swedish music.

The four movements are like an entire universe of emotions and range from worry and sorrow to life-affirming joy and mild drama. We hear a trio with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s flute player Andreas Ahlin, and the orchestra’s pianist Stefan Lindgren, along with a guest performance by Josef Alin on cello.
The trio begins with music by Amy Beach (1867–1944), the first major successful American female composer. Essentially all of her works were printed and performed during her lifetime, and her renown reached Europe as well. Pastorale is poetic and moody, and is followed by the rush and cheeriness of Caprice.

Prague-born Erwin Schulhoff was an exciting name in the European art and music scene in the early decades of the twentieth century. Dvorák encouraged him to start studying music, and he was inspired early on by jazz and Dadaism. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Schulhoff’s racing String Quartet No. 1.
Germaine Tailleferre was a member of Les Six, a loosely formed group of six composers in France in the 1920s who reacted against Impressionist and late-Romantic music. Her work is often light and playful, and filled with imaginative melodies.
Three divertimenti composed by Benjamin Britten at age 23. This charming and energetic music was included in a quintet and depicted a few of his classmates.

We hear British-American Rebecca Clarke’s (1886–1979) atmospheric and passionate work for violin and piano: powerful, yet lyrical music with vast string chords and elegant piano accompaniment.
The melodies are beautiful throughout Beethoven’s so-called Spring Sonata. Beethoven composed most of his sonatas for violin and piano within a span of five years, around the turn of the century to the year 1800. The first few follow in the footsteps of Haydn and Mozart, but in the fourth and fifth sonatas, a change occurs: he takes a brand new approach and uses the expressive registers of the piano and violin to the maximum. The fifth, which we hear at this concert, is the best known.

She is celebrated for her crystal-clear high notes and appears regularly in concert and opera settings. She has become established as a leading performer of modern music. At this soup concert, Büchel gives the world premiere of a piece by American-Swedish Molly Kien.
All works at this concert are for voice in various combinations with instruments. Maurice Karkoff was one of the great Swedish composers of the post-war era, with an oeuvre that included twelve symphonies. But he is still best known for his songs, and we hear Three Chinese Songs for soprano and harp here. Finnish Kaija Saariaho’s delicate Il Pleut was composed for the same combination, to text by Guillaume Apollinaire. French André Jolivet’s beautifully melancholy Suite Liturgique from 1942 finishes the programme and gathers the entire ensemble.
Oboist Jesper Harryson has been a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra since 1993. Mikael Sjögren is alternate solo cellist and a member of the orchestra since 1984, and Laura Stephenson has been the orchestra’s harpist since 1992.
