Maskuniitty regularly appears as a soloist and in various chamber music contexts, here together with pianist Martin Sturfält, who performed at Konserthuset’s large Stenhammar Festival in autumn 2021.
This concert presents music from two national composers. This year marks 150 years since the birth of Hugo Alfvén, who is considered Sweden’s great composer. At this concert, we hear his emotional Notturno Elegiaco for horn and piano. Canto Serioso, by Danish Carl Nielsen, was originally composed as an audition piece for the Royal Danish Orchestra in Copenhagen to fill the position of low hornist. Nielsen makes use of the low register of the horn, as well as the sonorous mid range, thus demonstrating the full charm of the instrument.
We also hear no less than two world premieres! Two Pieces for Horn and Piano is composed by British Piers Hellawell (born 1956), and I Remember River Clear by Swedish Albert Schnelzer (born 1972), who was also featured at Konserthuset’s Composer Weekend in 2017.

His music is inspired by jazz, folk music and Jewish music tradition. Milhaud wrote numerous pieces of chamber music; here, we hear the Sonata for two violins and piano.
Another prolific composer was English-American Rebecca Clarke (1886–1979), who left behind around 100 pieces. She was known in her time as a masterful alto violinist, and one of the first professional female orchestral musicians. This performance features Clarke’s Three Movements for two violins and piano.
On piano, we hear Stefan Lindgren, who has performed with most major orchestras in Sweden. He has been the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s pianist since 2007 and frequently participates in chamber music concerts. Daniela Bonfiglioli has been a member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s first violin section since 2011. Claudia Bonfiglioli has been section leader of Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s second violins since 2013.

This trio tackles music for the rather uncommon combination of piano, cello and flute.
American Amy Beach (1867–1944) was a pioneer among female composers in the US, as well as a touring pianist of the highest calibre. We hear her first two pieces for this trio combination. Several versions exist of the first part, Pastorale, but the version for flute, cello and piano is the original. Beach added Caprice, which is in turn a reworking of a previous piano piece. The sparkling Caprice has a sub-title: Water Sprites.
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s trio is among the nineteenth century’s masterpieces of the genre – with predecessors such as Beethoven’s Archduke Trio, and Schubert’s two trios. All of these are for the common trio combination with violin, but Mendelssohn-Bartholdy created this version with flute. This dazzlingly graceful and vital music has become one of his most popular pieces.

The symphonies by Johann Sebastian Bach and music by the less well-known Bernhard Heinrich Romberg are included in the former category. Romberg was a successful cellist in Germany in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, and played with Beethoven and Haydn, among others. We hear the elegant trio in E minor, op. 38:1.
Mauricio Kagel (1931–2008) was born in Argentina, but worked almost his entire life in Germany. He was a member of the avant-garde Darmstadt School and often composed music with theatrical and absurdist elements. We hear his Aus dem Nachlass from 1986.
The finale is a world premiere. Molly Kien is an American composer who has been based in Stockholm for several decades. She studied under Sven-David Sandström, among others. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra has played her harp concerto, and several of her chamber music pieces have previously been performed at Konserthuset.
Members of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra perform the music. Since 2018, American Vicki Powell has been section leader of the orchestra’s violin section. Since 2019, Josep Castanyer Alonso has been a member of the cello section and Valur Pálsson has been section leader of the double bass section since 1991.

Johannes Lörstad is section leader of the second violins; Won-Hee Lee is a member of the second violin section; Vicki Powell is section leader of the viola section; and Marie Macleod is the orchestra’s solo cellist.
Gabriella Smith (born 1991) has been acclaimed for her original approach to exploring and playing with new sounds in her work, whether orchestral, choral, chamber music or electronic pieces. Porcupine Wash was composed in 2019, and the piece incorporates pens and paper clips.
Caroline Shaw (born 1983) has won the Pulitzer Prize for her music. The title of this string quartet, Plan and Elevation, refers to the architect’s blueprints: Plan is a bird’s eye view of the space and its surroundings, while Elevation provides a picture of the building’s facade. These are suitable associations for her sparse and airy composition style, in which she uses clear melodic gestures and repetitive patterns. The work also refers to famous pieces from the quartet repertoire, including by Ravel and Mozart.

Six young musicians and ensembles from various countries are selected each year and given the opportunity to tour the concert halls and perform before international audiences.
Don’t miss the opportunity to hear tomorrow’s classical music stars today. Experience shows that those who are selected as Rising Stars also have internationally successful careers. This year’s Rising Stars will be presented during an intensive weekend of chamber music at Konserthuset Stockholm.
Saxophonist Jess Gillam, nominated to Rising Stars by Sage Gateshead, has performed at Last Night of the Proms and was the first saxophonist to reach the finale of BBC Young Musician. She performs together with pianist Zeynep Özsuca.

For example, she was the first female American composer to write large orchestral works. She was also a successful pianist and performed concerts in the US and Europe. We hear two works by Amy Beach here. In Three Pieces, she has the violin demonstrate different playing techniques in each piece. Valse Caprice for piano is an exuberantly playful delight in triple time – and one of the first pieces she played publicly.
When Clara Schumann heard the scherzo in her friend Johannes Brahms’ four-movement Sonata No. 3 for violin and piano, she thought it sounded like a young woman with her beloved. The otherwise rather dramatic sonata, with darkly expressive outer movements, takes the listener to Brahms’ youth. This sonata for violin and piano was Brahms’ final work in the genre, and was composed primarily during the highly creative summer of 1886.
We hear Amus Kerstin Andersson, alternate section leader and well-known profile in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s second violin section, as well as pianist Bengt-Åke Lundin. Lundin’s debut concert with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra was in 1989.

She has composed for all formats, including numerous orchestral works. Her pieces often have imaginative and inspiring titles, and String Quartet No. 4 from 2017 is no exception: En noir et or – “In Black and Gold.” The music is inspired by James Whistler’s evocative painting Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket (1875).
Gold is also present in Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor, one of the great masterpieces of the genre. It is traditionally arranged with four movements, but in this well-known form, Debussy has brought out musical gold with lyrically caressing melodies, rhythmic challenges and surprising harmonies.
Lola Torrente has been a member of the orchestra’s first violin section since 2015; Gabriel Cornet has been a member of the second violin section since 2016; Lauriane Dahlkvist has been a member of the viola section since 2016; and Josep Castanyer Alsonso has been a member of the cello section since 2019.

Her music has been performed on several occasions at Konserthuset. Higdon has explained that she has leaned towards the tradition of the sonata for viola and piano, for example Paul Hindemith, who composed a great deal for his instrument, the viola, but also works she played herself (on flute) by Stravinsky and her fellow American, Copland.
Dichterliebe is a celebrated song cycle by Robert Schumann, but the music is performed here in an arrangement for viola and piano. The viola, with its rich and expressive colours, replaces the human voice in the song. Listeners who are familiar with Dichterliebe may still be able to hear Heinrich Heine’s words through the notes: Im wunderschönen Monat Mai …
We hear Nadine Jurdzinski from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s viola section perform here with renowned pianist Love Derwinger, who has appeared worldwide and alternates soloist performances with chamber music.

He appears at this concert with fellow countryman Tom Grimaud, with whom he has performed soup concerts on two previous occasions, in 2018 and 2019.
This time, the programme includes Polish and Czech music. Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz (1909–1969) was also a world-class violinist, and her oeuvre consists of no less than seven (!) virtuosic violin concertos. Sonata No. 4 for violin and piano is a powerfully expressive piece of music, with lively rhythms, playfulness and humour.
Leos Janácek’s Sonata for violin and piano was composed at the outbreak of World War I, and Janácek recalls the summer of 1914, when he began composing the piece, saying he “could almost hear the sound of steel crashing about in my worried mind.” The mature composer’s style is evident here, with a melody that occasionally resembles spoken phrases, and as with Bacewicz, the music contains imaginative rhythms.

One was Valborg Aulin, a composer, pianist and teacher. Among others, she studied under Ludvig Norman, who also helped her study abroad, including in Paris. Her brief, melodic and melancholy Elegie for violin and piano is a reworking of music originally composed for piano.
Beethoven composed most of his sonatas for violin and piano within a span of five years around the turn of the century to the year 1800. Only the last, which is performed here, Sonata No. 10 in G major, was composed slightly later: 1812. It is atmospheric and pastoral music, perhaps the most heartfelt of his violin sonatas: charged with pain, longing and incredible passion.
We hear Henrik Hansson, member of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s first violin section, together with his son, Nils Hansson Meng, who has been studying at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki since 2017.
