About the concert
På svenskaPhilharmonic musicians perform Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in an arrangement for eight musicians.
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is one of the most famous works in the classical repertoire. The music depicts ten paintings by the artist Viktor Hartmann, who had died suddenly at the age of just 39. In his honour, his friends – including Mussorgsky – organised an exhibition in St Petersburg, where more than 400 of his works were displayed.
Deeply moved by the memories the exhibition evoked, Mussorgsky composed his piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition. The so-called Promenade theme, which serves as a link between the different “pictures”, is familiar to many listeners.
Here, we experience Pictures at an Exhibition in a specially commissioned arrangement by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal trumpet, Joakim Agnas, who is also active as a jazz musician. For many years, he was a member of Stockholm Chamber Brass, and he is also active as a studio musician, arranger and composer. Among much else, he has written a number of acclaimed fanfares.
