1900 – An Audiovisual Concert

With melancholic melodic lines, tape hiss and a distinctive visual language, 1900 has become one of the most acclaimed projects in Swedish instrumental music. The piece Den minsta av segrar (The Smallest of Victories), from the debut album released in 2008, has achieved near-cult status.

Behind the name 1900 is composer, artist and sound artist Christian Gabel. Using analogue recording equipment and an unrivalled sense for minimalist melodies, he creates textured sound collages that revisit and reshape the musical and artistic ideas of the previous century.

In spring 2024, Kontragarde, the third and final album released under the 1900 name, was unveiled. Exploring themes of artistic creation and ideas of the avant-garde, the album was followed by a series of audiovisual performances, including two sold-out evenings at Dramaten. The production has been praised by critics for its innovative interplay of music and image.

In this audiovisual performance, Christian Gabel creates a hypnotic work of stage art inspired by the innovators and avant-gardists of the twentieth century. 1960s minimalism, free jazz and musique concrète are woven together with sepia-toned film into an evocative whole where music and image converge. The concert opens this year’s Stockholm Jazz Festival and also marks the conclusion of the 1900 project.
