Bengt Paulsson first came to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra as a substitute in 1980. After a period as a solo trumpet player with the Royal Swedish Orchestra in 1981–1983 he became a permanent member of the Philharmonic Orchestra in autumn 1983.
Paulsson studied at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg and also played for a period with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, before pursuing additional studies in Chicago with legendary trumpet player Adolph Herseth in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Bengt Paulsson has a background as a big band trumpet player and in addition to his work with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, he is also active as a freelance musician. Among other things, he has worked in numerous musical productions, including Kristina from Duvemåla, Phantom of the Opera and West Side Story. He has also performed as a soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in Torelli’s Trumpet Concerto in D-Major and as one of the soloists in Leroy Anderson’s Bugler’s Holiday.
