RSPO Orchestra Academy – one year of education offered on site at Konserthuset Stockholm in collaboration with the Piteå School of Music at the Luleå University of Technology.
Since January 2016, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (RSPO) offers one year of training on site at Konserthuset Stockholm. The RSPO Orchestra Academy aims to give participating young musicians heightened knowledge and understanding of the profession by giving them the possibility to work with – and alongside – one of Europe’s leading symphony orchestras.
The academy is an intense year of full-time studies, over the course of which the academists play between 30 and 60 orchestral and chamber concerts for live audiences in Konserthuset Stockholm and other venues. Some of these take place during the 8-12 concert productions with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by world-renowned conductors, a unique possibility to get familiarised with the core symphonic repertoire.
The academy musicians also receive individual tuition on their instrument by tutors that are predominantly leaders and principals of the orchestra. In addition, extensive chamber music playing is a vital part of the course as well as seminars with experienced teachers from the School of Music at Lulea University of Technology. Another core part of the program is a number of ”mock auditions”; faked auditions with immediate feedback in front of a jury from the orchestra.
The examiner of the program is conductor Petter Sundkvist, professor at the Luleå University of Technology.

Samuel Barber’s Summer Music is a wind quintet with some bluesy ingredients. This is followed by Tchaikovsky’s string sextet Souvenir de Florence. Its title, Memory from Florence, indicates where he began composing it. Finally wind players and strings are gathered together to perform Swedish composer Johannes Pollak’s Elegy, a piece premiered by the RSPO Orchestra Academy of 2020, now returning in a version adapted for this year’s academists.
